February 25 is International Cochlear Implant Day, also known as CI Day. This specific day of the year is chosen because it recognises the anniversary of the first-ever cochlear implant procedure. This was done way back in 1961 by a pair of doctors in Los Angeles, California, and was a massive step forward for deaf people across the world.

Cochlear implants are small electronic devices that can help people to hear when they are either completely deaf or significantly hard of hearing. There are two main parts to a cochlear implant; the first is worn behind the ear like a normal hearing aid, and the second is surgically placed under the skin of the head. Together, they create a new way for sound to reach the brain and be understood, instead of having to go through the damaged part of a person’s ear.

It is estimated that more than 700,000 people worldwide currently benefit from cochlear implants, however there are many more who could have their lives changed by this technology if they had the knowledge and access to it.
